The Jeep Grand Cherokee Tackles the Ford Explorer in a Head-to-Head Comparison
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the most popular SUVs on our lot here at Floyd A. Megee Motor Company. Drivers searching for the rugged and adventurous spirit of the Jeep lineup have been choosing the Grand Cherokee as a go-to option for decades.
The Grand Cherokee is a classic model name for the Jeep stable of vehicles, but it's done anything but stand still since its first introduction in 1993. This is an SUV that has added power, technology, and comfort over the years, and has morphed into a highly-customizable vehicle that offers a little something for everyone from Milsboro to Milton, and beyond.
The Ford Explorer is another popular SUV that first debuted roughly the same time as the Grand Cherokee, in the early 1990's. Both SUVs have a lot to offer Delaware drivers throughout Sussex County, but one model clearly stands out more than the other. If you're interested in a new SUV, and both the Grand Cherokee and the Explorer are vying for your attention, we hope this side-by-side comparison helps in your decision-making process.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee vs. the Ford Explorer
- Power and performance. Both of these SUVs offer Georgetown drivers several options for how they want their vehicle powered. But, the available engines from the Jeep Grand Cherokee blow the Ford Explorer out of the water. In fact, with a top power rating of 707 horsepower for the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk beast, the Jeep SUV blows most vehicles out of the water. The Grand Cherokee also offers a variety of other power ratings for drivers who don't need the monstrous Trackhawk performance, starting with a nice 295-horsepower V6, and moving towards a hefty 475-horsepower V8. The Explorer, on the other hand, starts out with a 290-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder, and tops out at 400 horsepower for its top-of-the-line turbo V6 engine. Â
- Options. Not only does the Grand Cherokee engine range offer more oomph than the Ford Explorer, it also has more options, including a nice turbodiesel V6. The Explorer doesn't have a diesel-powered engine in its range. Â
- Off-road prowess. Whether your Salisbury, MD weekends involve four-wheeling on the beaches, or camping jaunts in the woods, the Jeep Grand Cherokee offers more off-road prowess than the Ford Explorer. In fact, the entire Jeep model lineup is renowned for its off-the-beaten-path capabilities, and the Grand Cherokee is a shining example of that. While the Grand Cherokee offers four-wheel drive across the lineup and has the Trailhawk trim which is specially designed for drivers who like to go off road, the Ford Explorer has optional all-wheel drive, and no special-tuned off-road models. Â
- Size and space. One of the biggest differences between these two SUVs is that the Ford Explorer offers three rows of seating, while the Jeep Grand Cherokee has room for five in two rows of seats. But, just because the Explorer can squeeze more people in, don't mistake that to mean it's a more spacious SUV. In fact, the Grand Cherokee offers plenty of legroom and space for passengers to stretch out in, while the third row in the Explorer is small and better left to young children. Plus, the Explorer makes a huge sacrifice in cargo space to squeeze in that third row. The Grand Cherokee has a rear hold that accommodates 36.3 cubic feet of cargo, while the Explorer's rear hold can only accommodate 21 cubic feet.
