The Ram 1500 Takes on the Pickup Truck Competition

The Ram 1500 is an inimitable pickup truck, and one of the most popular models on the Georgetown lot at Floyd A. Megee Motor Company. A smooth ride, a high-end interior, and rugged utility are the hallmarks of the Ram 1500, making it the one truck that should be at the top of any vehicle shopper's must-see list.

While the Ram has a lot going for it, and so much to offer that it practically recommends itself, we know that it's not the only light-duty pickup truck around. If you're considering the Ram 1500, but you're torn by other well-known models, we can help.

We've done our homework and pit the Ram against the competition from both Ford and Chevrolet, to illustrate for our customers in the Milsboro and Milford area just what sets the Ram 1500 apart. While all three of these pickups can tow and haul heavy loads, and come in a variety of trims and cab styles, and each has something to appeal to drivers of all tastes and personalities, the Ram 1500 sets itself apart in a number of key areas.

The Ram 1500 vs. the Ford F-150

  • Fuel efficient model availability. Ram makes one trim level of the 1500 lineup available as a fuel efficient option. The rear-wheel drive only Ram HFE is equipped with a standard V6 engine to maximize efficiency, while the Ford F-150 truck doesn't have a fuel-efficient designed model in its lineup.
  •
  • Standard power. The base engine for the Ram 1500 is a V6 rated for 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque, with other, more powerful, engines available as you move up the trim levels. While the Ford also offers multiple engine options, its base engine isn't as powerful as that of the Ram. The Ford F-150 standard power is also a V6, but it's rated for 290 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque.
  •
  • Suspension. The Ram 1500 has the unique Ram spring-coil, five-link suspension, which makes your ride smooth and even every time, whether empty or fully loaded. The Ford F-150 can't make the same claim to a smooth ride, and, in fact, can run rough over bumps when empty, because it doesn't have the same innovative suspension system.

The Ram 1500 vs. the Chevy Silverado 1500

  • Engine availability. All three of the trucks looked at for this comparison have an optional, powerful V8 engine in their lineup. However, while the V8 is available starting at the base model Ram, Chevy doesn't make the V8 an option on the Silverado 1500 until much further up the trim level lineup. Only mid-range and upper-trim shoppers can get their Silverado with the same power that even an entry-level Ram can come with.
  •
  • Improved efficiency trim. While the V8 engine can be ordered on even the base model Ram 1500, there is one model in the Ram lineup that it can't be ordered on, and that's the Ram 1500 HFE. This is the second trim level option for the Ram truck, and the reason why the V8 isn't available for it is because this is a model that's designed to give you power and fuel efficiency. To increase efficiency, it's also strictly a rear-wheel drive model. Meanwhile, the Silverado lineup doesn't offer drivers the option of getting a more fuel efficient truck.
  •
  • Standard power. Not only are drivers who shop for entry-level model Silverado 1500 trucks stuck with only the standard engine (because the more-powerful options aren't available until later in the lineup), the standard power is also not as strong as the standard power on the Ram 1500. The Ram 1500 gives you a base 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque, while the first three trim options for the Silverado are all powered by a 285-horsepower V6.
